Germany faces transit chaos 29–31 August

According to the ADAC, the most affected routes include:

  • A1 Lubeck - Hamburg - Bremen - Dortmund
  • A3 Passau - Nuremberg - Frankfurt - Cologne (an important east-west axis for transit traffic from Austria and the Czech Republic)
  • A5 Basel - Karlsruhe - Frankfurt (key route for north-south traffic from Switzerland and France)
  • A6 Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg (cross connection between France and the Czech Republic)
  • A7 Flensburg - Hamburg - Kassel - Wurzburg - Ulm - Fussen/Reutte (central north-south axis from Scandinavia to Austria/Italy)
  • A8 Karlsruhe - Stuttgart - Munich - Salzburg (important connection to Austria and Southeast Europe)
  • A9 Berlin - Leipzig/Halle - Nuremberg - Munich
  • A93 Kufstein - Inntal Triangle (transit axis from Italy/Austria to southern Germany)

Additionally, the bypasses of major metropolitan areas such as the A10 Berlin Ring and the A99 Munich are prone to congestions.

Lorry bans in Bavaria

On the transit routes to Austria, additional lorry bans apply for alternative traffic until the end of the Bavarian summer holidays. Affected are the A8 (Munich - Salzburg) between the Bad Aibling and Felden interchanges and the A93 (Rosenheim - Kufstein) near Reischenhart and Brannenburg. Vehicles that divert to country roads during congestions are directed back to the motorway by the police.

Closures and roadworks

In addition to the more than 1,200 ongoing construction sites, several full closures will be added this weekend:

  • A42 Kamp-Lintfort direction Dortmund between Oberhausen Neue Mitte and Kreuz Essen-Nord (August 30, 10 PM to September 1, 5 AM)
  • A46 Wuppertal - Dusseldorf in both directions between Sonnborn and Haan-Ost / Cronenberg (August 29, 8 PM to September 1, 5 AM)
  • A60 Mainz, between Dreieck Mainz and Mainz-Finthen, until September 2 at night between 9 PM and 5 AM
  • A45 Hagen - Giessen: Closure of the Ludenscheid valley bridge has no end date

For transit traffic, especially on the A45, this means wide diversions with additional travel time.

Situation in European countries

Transport companies must also expect delays on important European corridors:

  • Austria: Construction sites on the Brenner Autobahn (A13) and exit bans along the Inntal Autobahn (A12). High risk of congestions also on the Tauern and Pyhrn routes.
  • Switzerland/Austria: Pfander Tunnel (A14 Rhine Valley Autobahn) with alternating night closures.
  • Italy/France: The Mont Blanc Tunnel is completely closed from September 1 until mid-December - a massive impact on Alpine transit.
  • Czech Republic: Bottlenecks on the D8 (Dresden - Prague) due to tunnel renovations near the German border.
  • Netherlands: A12 between Arnhem and Utrecht closed until September 1.

Border controls increase delays

The stricter border controls since May lead to additional waiting times, especially at crossings:

  • A3 Suben (Passau - Linz)
  • A8 Walserberg (Munich - Salzburg)
  • A93 Kiefersfelden (Rosenheim - Kufstein)

Delays are also expected at the borders to Poland (A4 Gorlitz, A12 Frankfurt/Oder, A15 Forst) and the Czech Republic (A17, A93) according to the ADAC.

Recommendation for transporters

The ADAC advises planning transport for Tuesday to Thursday if possible, as the risk of congestions is lowest on these days.

The burdens are highest on Friday and Sunday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

For time-critical deliveries, companies should calculate longer travel times and check diversions.
