A van landed on its side

Traffic on the M5 in Somerset was at a standstill after a van flipped onto its side this morning (Friday, May 29).

All traffic was held on the southbound carriageway between Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare, junctions 20 to 21.

Pictures from the scene show a van on its side in lane three of the motorway, with traffic queued behind.

Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the crash at 5.57am.

It said: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M5 Southbound from J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon) to J21 A370 (Weston-super-mare).”

National Highways said there were delays on 30 minutes on approach, and that emergency services were at the scene.

At 7.50am the motorway was cleared and traffic returned to normal.

AA Roadwatch warns drivers there are “severe” delays on the M5 this morning.

It said:

Severe delays of 101 minutes and delays increasing on M5 Southbound between J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) and J21 A370 (Weston-Super-Mare). Average speed five mph.
