M6 re-opens after five hour closure due to concern for safety

Traffic was diverted as police shut down the stretch of the M6 from Samlesbury to Broughton in both directions The M6 at Preston has been reopened after a five hour closure to begin the year. Lancashire Police closed the motorway from Junction 31 (Samlesbury) to Junction 32 (Broughton) in both directions.

They were called to a concern for welfare at the Longridge Road bridge between Ribbleton and Red Scar around 12.30am on New Year's Day (Thursday 1 January).

Emergency services worked at the scene to resolve the incident - with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service crews seen in Longridge Road as police sealed off the motorway bridge. Motorists were diverted off the M6 and through Preston during the closure.

The motorway fully re-opened shortly before 5.30am on New Year's Day and no delays are being reported at present.
