M56 live updates as drivers face 90-minute queues and lanes shut

Motorists are facing "severe delays" on the M56 near Runcorn this morning. Two lanes of the westbound carriageway are closed following an oil spillage between J12 A557 (Runcorn) and J14 A5117 (Chester Services / Helsby), affecting drivers travelling towards Manchester. Queues of around seven miles are affecting motorists, with 90-minute delays reported and congestion to J11 (Preston Brook) A553 Central Expressway.

It follows an overturned lorry on the motorway on Wednesday night. A National Highways north west spokesperson posted on X: "Lanes 1 & 2 (of 3) remain closed on the #M56 westbound between J12 (#Runcorn) & J14 (#Elton) for emergency works to treat an oil and diesel spillage. There are 90 min delays above normal travel time with 7 miles congestion on approach.

Allow extra journey time." Get all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you by signing up to our daily and breaking newsletter.[1] Sign up to our breaking news newsletter here.
