All you need to know after the M6 and M55 are shut with no estimated reopening time
- Two busy motorways were shut on New Years Day due to a police incident. The M6 in Lancashire is closed in both directions between J31 (Preston) and J32 (M55), while the M55 eastbound is shut between J1 and the M6 due to this incident.
- National Highways initially said there was no estimated reopening time due to the nature of the incident, but the process is underway to reopen both motorways as the police led incident has concluded. The motorway was shut for more than four hours.
- Emergency services including, Lancashire Police, were in attendance and National Highways were deployed on the scene to assist with traffic management.
National Highways issued both northbound and southbound diversion routes and encouraged road users to allow extra travel time.
- Road users travelling northbound and southbound were advised to follow a lengthy diversion route while crews worked at the scene, while traffic that was caught within the closure was slowly released by highway officers. There were lengthy delays reported while the M6 was shut, and National Highways thanked drivers for their patience while they worked at the scene.
- The exact nature of the incident is not yet know - only that Lancashire Police were leading the operation. The road was reopened just before rush hour on New Year's Day, meaning traffic should cope well this morning as diversions are no longer in place.
