A lorry driver has been taken to hospital after a serious collision on the A1(M) in County Durham[1]. The lorry was the only vehicle involved in the crash[2], which took place between junction 60, the Bradbury Interchange; and junction 59, Coatham, shortly after 3pm.

Emergency services were called and the road was closed, with a diversion in place to take motorists through Newton Aycliffe[3] before re-joining the road near Brafferton. One motorist reported a huge emergency services' presence to ChronicleLive, and reported being stuck in traffic for over an hour.

Durham Constabulary[4] urged motorists to avoid the area where possible.

The force has since said that the HGV driver has been taken to hospital.

A statement said: "Police were called at 3.10pm today (September 10) following a one-vehicle collision on the A1(M).

"The incident, which involved a HGV, took place on the southbound carriageway between the Bradbury and Newton Aycliffe junctions. The driver of the HGV has been taken to hospital for treatment."

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that the driver had been taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital. Its statement said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 southbound near Newton Aycliffe today (10 September) at 15:06.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one critical care paramedic and a clinical team leader to the incident.

One patient was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital."
