Logistics UK Compliance Platform Delivers Peace of Mind

"Compliance with drivers' hours rules is a critical component of an operator's safety system," say the Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain in their 2024- 25 Annual Report and "operators need to make sure that the law is complied with as a minimum and to ensure that their drivers are able to drive safely." The annual report also makes it clear that "non-compliance with drivers' hours often indicates inadequate management systems" and responsible operators know that compliance is a much broader discipline than simply adhering to drivers' hours requirements. "The financial and reputational risks for noncompliance are stark," comments Jemma James, Digital Development Director at Logistics UK. "In the 12 months to March 2025, there were 682 public inquiries involving goods vehicle operators: 196 resulted in revocations of licences and 81 inquiries where Transport Managers were disqualified. Only 33 of the public inquiries ended with no action taken.
This shows how critical it is that operators remain on top of legislation and have the correct systems in place to ensure a public inquiry doesn't become a reality for them. Using a dedicated platform such as Vision to oversee all aspects of operations makes managing compliance requirements much more straightforward, leaving operators free to concentrate on their core business with the reassurance that they won't be contributing to the Traffic Commissioners' next annual report." Major waste and recycling company SUEZ recycling and recovery UK (SUEZ) began using Vision in the mid-2000s and has seen its adoption of the service develop from analogue tachograph analysis to implementing the product's full compliance suite.
The company uses the platform to manage over 1300 vehicles and 1500 drivers across 50 main depots and 100 operating centres, each performing hundreds of stops and deliveries every day. "Vision improves our compliance while making our jobs easier," says Daniel Brooks, Fleet Compliance Manager at SUEZ. "Everything is in one place and the real-time visibility makes it easy to see the current state of play, so we can maintain strong operational standards across all our drivers and vehicles." Compliance requirements vary by sector with fuel distribution particularly heavily regulated; this includes strict adherence to hazardous material laws and strict safety protocols.
Safety is of particular importance in this sector and use of the Vision platform has enabled leading fuel distribution company Gleaner to overcome compliance challenges related to managing driver infringements and a time-consuming manual debriefing process. Michelle Cruickshank, Senior Transport Manager at Gleaner Ltd commented, "Vision has streamlined our administrative processes and transformed driver activity monitoring. The advanced reporting, alerts, and tracking features have enabled us to improve decision-making and training significantly.
It has enhanced our overall compliance scores compared to national haulage and oil distribution companies and helps ensure we remain both safe and compliant with regulations." Ms James concludes, "The compliance landscape is changing all the time and since Vision is underpinned by the experience of Logistics UK and its unparalleled Member Advice Centre (MAC), users can be confident they are well-informed regarding current and upcoming legislation. Users tell us that the Vision platform enables them to perform the best they can, without the worry of a call from the Traffic Commissioners."
