Collett debuts new girder frame with transformer haul to Ironbridge

Collett & Sons has put its new 150-tonne girder frame trailer through its first test, moving a 139-tonne transformer to Ironbridge Substation in Shropshire. The debut underlines the company's continued role in delivering critical power infrastructure projects across the UK. The new girder frame, the third to join Collett's fleet alongside 250-tonne and 550-tonne models, offers a versatile lightweight option for power sector deliveries.

Fully refurbished and serviced in-house, the trailer was paired with Collett's EuroCombi modular axles to carry the transformer, manufactured by Hyosung. The cargo, measuring 7.75 metres long, 4.4 metres wide and 4.5 metres high, was discharged at Ellesmere Port using a Liebherr LTM 1800 crane before being secured onto the new trailer for its onward journey.

Two-day transformer delivery

The 110-mile journey to Ironbridge required detailed preparation by Collett's Projects and Consulting team, including a full route survey and swept path analysis. At multiple points, significant street furniture removal was needed to accommodate the 61-metre-long convoy.

The convoy completed the journey in line with the project delivery schedule.

Supporting the UK's grid redevelopment

Ironbridge Substation, part of the redevelopment of the former Ironbridge Power Station site, plays a key role in upgrading regional electricity distribution.

The decommissioning of the coal-fired station in 2015 has paved the way for modernisation of local power infrastructure, and Collett continues to provide transport and installation services to support the transition.
