Serious crash between car and lorry closes A1(M) in North Yorkshire

A large stretch of the A1(M) in North Yorkshire has been closed by a serious crash. Shortly before 11.30pm last night (Friday) National Highways Yorkshire said the motorway was shut in both directions between junction 50 (Ripon) and junction 52 (Catterick) due to a collision between a car and a lorry All the emergency services, including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, went to the scene.

In the early hours of this morning, the southbound carriageway was reopened and waiting traffic released. But the northbound carriageway remains shut to allow crash investigation work to continue. North Yorkshire Police said at 11.39pm last night: "Please avoid the area, and use alternative routes where possible while emergency services work at the scene.
"Thank you for your understanding."
Traffic is being diverted via the A6055.
