Barrier repairs on the M6 are to continue overnight as an 11-hour closure has been partially lifted. Lancashire Police said two lanes are now open on the stretch of the motorway between Junction 33 (Garstang) and Junction 32 (Broughton). The M6 was closed around 10.30am on Monday[9] (14 July) when six vehicles were involved in a crash which saw a large-scale emergency services response.

The North West Ambulance Service sent seven crews, two air ambulances and other clinicians[11] to the scene close to Forton Services. Eight people have been treated for injuries, with five of them described as being seriously injured. Two young children are understood to be among those hurt, with one of the children airlifted to Manchester Children's Hospital.

In an update on Monday evening police said: "The southbound closure has now been lifted although lane 3 remains closed for National Highways to carry out repair work to the central reservation. Lane 3 northbound is also closed for repair work but the other two lanes are open. "The intention is for work to the central barrier to be carried out overnight with all three lanes in each direction being open and ready for Tuesday's morning rush hour.

"We know any closure of the motorway is frustrating, and we are grateful for your understanding while our officers and partner agencies have gone about their work today. We have made every effort to ensure the motorway has reopened as soon as possible." Motorists heading southbound on the M6 reported delays of more than two hours - starting from Junction 35 - as traffic was diverted off at Garstang and down the A6 to re-join the motorway at Junction 32.

There were also delays on the M6 northbound with the barrier repairs seeing a lane closed from Monday lunchtime and delays of more than an hour at peak periods. Police continue to appeal for information, witnesses and dashcam footage and they can be contacted on 101 quoting log 0430 of July 14.
