GH By-Products Drives Forward With Investment in Volvo FH Aero Trucks

GH By-Products (Derby) Ltd, a leading name in specialist transport across the UK, has strengthened its commitment to operational excellence with a significant investment in its vehicle fleet. Known for its expertise in the collection and transport of animal by-products and food waste, the company operates over 200 trailers and around 50 vehicles, each of which is tailored to meet strict Animal By-Product regulations. Now, with the successful introduction of the new Volvo FH Aero trucks, GH By-Products is not only expanding but also modernising its operations.

"We've made an investment of around GBP1.6 million so far," says Cliff Mear, Transport Director. "That's enabled us to bring in 13 new vehicles over the last 12 months, with another 12 still to come. Most recently, we've added the new Volvo FH Aero models to the fleet." The new FH Aeros represent a strategic shift toward greater fuel efficiency and environmental performance. "Of the 13 vehicles we've added, nine have been the standard Volvo FH models, and four are the new Aeros.

We've been really pleased with the performance," enthuses Cliff. The Volvo FH Aero has drawn attention in the long-haul market thanks to its advanced aerodynamic design, energy-saving technology, and versatile powertrain options. With a streamlined cab silhouette and an integrated Camera Monitoring System that replaces traditional mirrors, the truck significantly reduces drag, improves visibility, and enhances fuel efficiency.

Further features like I-Save, with its D13 engine and turbo compound technology, and I-See, which optimises performance in real-time based on topography and traffic, work together to maximise efficiency and reduce operating costs. These innovations make the FH Aero ideal for long-distance routes where fuel economy and reliability are critical. Beyond performance, the Volvo FH Aero is engineered with driver comfort and safety at its core.

The Globetrotter XXL cab offers more space without compromising loading capacity, providing a premium environment for drivers on extended journeys. Inside, the intuitive infotainment and audio system creates a high-end experience both in motion and at rest.  Volvo Dynamic Steering is another advantage.

It helps reduce strain by compensating for road disturbances like side winds and potholes, while the I-Shift gearbox ensures seamless gear changes for a smooth and responsive ride. Altogether, these features combine to offer a high-performing, comfortable, and future-ready truck that meets the evolving demands of the transport sector. Volvo has long been the backbone of the GH By-Products fleet. "We've always had Volvos," Cliff notes. "Currently, we run about 40 Volvo trucks, alongside eight Scania, a couple of Mercs, and a couple of DAFs."

So why stick with Volvo? "We've got a great working relationship with our local dealer - Crossroads Truck and Bus - which is only about three or four miles away," Cliff says. "Their sales team is excellent from start to finish. They're a large operation and also own the Hartshorne Motor Group, so there's real scale behind their support. I even deal directly with the directors, and that makes a big difference.

Whenever we need something, they're always quick to respond and ready to help. "Since we introduced the Volvo FH Aeros in the fleet, we've quickly seen a positive improvement in fuel consumption - which is always a welcome change. Driver feedback has been positive too.

They're getting used to the new camera system. In fact, one of the younger drivers had already tried out the Volvo demonstrator, so he had a good idea of what to expect. Even the more experienced drivers have adjusted well."

As part of the company's wider strategy, the focus isn't just on performance, but sustainability too. "We're always doing our best to reduce emissions and improve our carbon footprint wherever we can. The FH Aeros are a step in that direction." However, it's critical that any efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport operation are not at the expense of service and reliability. "If you've got reliability in your fleet, people notice that. It reflects well on the business.

At the same time, we're very focused on compliance, it's a massive part of what we do. So it's about keeping the fleet updated and maximising performance wherever we can." Fleet investment at GH By-Products includes not just vehicles, but trailers too. "We introduced some new tankers early last year," Cliff explains. "And we've got 12 more Fruehauf step frame bathtub tippers on order for this year.

We've taken delivery of some already." Cliff sees the continued fleet expansion as a reflection of the company's steady growth. "We've taken on more contracts recently, and I'm sure there'll be more to come. It's a really positive direction for the business." This is reflected in its cohort of drivers which has increased, as has the maintenance department.

"Getting the right people in the workshop is a key priority - good maintenance staff are just as important as the vehicles themselves," acknowledges Cliff. When it comes to upkeep, the company uses a mixed approach. "We look after all our trailers in-house, as well as some of the older vehicles - those registered with 68- or 69-plates - that have come out of their R&M packages. The rest of the fleet, particularly the newer trucks, are all under R&M agreements."

Looking ahead, GH By-Products has more new vehicles scheduled to arrive over the coming months. With the recent addition of the Volvo FH Aeros, the company is gathering feedback to assess future orders. "We're monitoring their performance closely," he says. "They're all tracked, and we're collecting data. Volvo will also provide driver training through Crossroads Truck and Bus Group.

The idea is to bring their trainer in to work directly with our drivers, helping them get even more out of the Aeros."
