Stuart Nicol Expands Fleet with Four New Volvo FH Aero Trucks

Lanarkshire-based operator Stuart Nicol Transport has taken delivery of the first of four new Volvo FH Aero trucks as part of its latest fleet investment. The haulage business continues its long-term relationship with Volvo Trucks, specifying each unit to meet operational demands and enhance driver experience. Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus North & Scotland, the order includes three Globetrotter XL models and a top-spec Globetrotter XXL, all built around the new FH Aero platform.

Each vehicle has been tailored with specific axle configurations, power ratings, and comfort packages to match a variety of workstreams. The first unit--a Volvo FH Aero 460 Globetrotter XL 6x2--has already entered service. Featuring I-Save fuel technology, the truck is expected to clock up to 300,000 km per year, operating up to seven days a week.

Early fuel data is promising, with an improvement of one mile per gallon over the model it replaced. "When the FH Aero launched, we didn't hesitate - and we're very glad we didn't," said Stuart Nicol, owner of the business. "The fuel performance out of the box has been mightily impressive." Each truck is powered by Euro-6 compliant D13 Step E engines, with power ratings of 460hp, 500hp and 540hp across the fleet.

A 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox is standard, providing seamless gear changes and smoother acceleration.

Enhanced driver comfort

Comfort was a priority in the specifications. The first FH Aero includes Volvo's Drive+ package, offering leather upholstery, dual armrests, neck-tilt adjustable steering and advanced climate control with carbon filtering. Replacing conventional wing mirrors, Volvo's Camera Monitoring System (CMS) is included for improved visibility.

The CMS offers auto-panning functionality when towing and performs well in poor weather, low light and tunnel conditions. "There was a bit of an adjustment at first in moving away from traditional mirrors, but they have adapted quickly," Nicol explained. "It's clear Volvo has put a lot of thought into the working environment." The four new trucks will join a 70-strong mixed fleet, with around 50% supplied by Volvo.

All units are expected to remain in service for at least six years. The remaining three vehicles are due to arrive before the end of 2025. Founded in 2004 with just one truck, Stuart Nicol Transport now operates UK-wide from its base in Shotts, handling general haulage and overnight trunking work.
