Supporters have been lining the bridges along the M6 today as thousands of motorbike riders took part in a special event to celebrate the life of Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers.

Hundreds of riders travelled through Lancashire[1] as they journey from London to Dave's hometown of Barrow-in-Furness[2] in Cumbria[3].

More than 20,000 bikers took part in 'Dave Day' last year following the TV chef's tragic death from cancer, with many people lining motorway bridges in Lancashire to cheer and wave them on.

Today, the convoy stopped at Knutsford services from around 11.45am to 12.15pm before hitting the stretch of motorway near Preston[4] at around 1pm.

Further stops took place at Burton-in-Kendal services at 1.45pm to 2.15pm and motorists were being warned to expect delays on the M6 in Lancashire early this afternoon[5], LancsLive reports[6].

Lancashire Police said they will have an 'increased presence' as the motorbikes travel up the M6[8].

Westmorland and Furness Council has also warned of wider congestion around junction 36 of the M6, with Dave Day motorcyclists expected to arrive in Barrow from mid-afternoon.

The route will be via the A590[9] from the M6, turning left on to Park Road at entry into Barrow and proceeding to the town centre via Abbey Road.

Crowd barriers are being placed along the main town centre part of the motorcycle procession route and anyone wanting to watch the bikers arriving in town is being strongly urged to remain behind the barriers for their own safety and the safety of passing riders.

Lancashire Police said: "This Saturday will see plenty of motorbike riders make their way up to Barrow, from around the country using the motorways, in honour of the late 'Hairy Bikers' star, Dave Myers. Our officers will be out and about, and you'll particularly see our cars and police motorbikes on the motorway and routes towards Cumbria.

Agencies including Westmorland and Furness Council, emergency services and National Highways are working together to ensure spectators and visitors 'have a safe and trouble-free weekend'.
