Thousands of motorcyclists are expected on the M6 at Preston and throughout Lancashire for the second Dave Day. Riding in memory of the late Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers who died last year after a well documented battle with cancer. Lancashire Police says it will have an increased police presence along the M6 in the county as the convoy of bikers heads towards Myers native Cumbria and the Dave Day event in Barrow-in-Furness.
The Dave Day ride is expected on the motorway through Preston around 1pm-1.15pm on Saturday (21 June) based on the timings given[11] for it setting off from London around 7am with various stops along the way including Oxford Services, the National Motorcycle Museum and Knutsford Services. The bikers will stop at the Burton-in-Kendal services around 1.45pm. Last year hundreds of people packed motorway bridges from Leyland to Broughton to cheer on the convoy and pay their respects to Dave Myers who was an honorary fellow of the University of Central Lancashire.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "You may see an increased police presence, and a lot of motorbikes travelling up the M6! "This Saturday will see plenty of motorbike riders make their way up to Barrow, from around the country using the motorways, in honour of the late 'Hairy Bikers' star, Dave Myers. "Our officers will be out and about, and you'll particularly see our cars and police motorbikes on the motorway and routes towards Cumbria.
"Most importantly, we hope all the motorcyclists participating have an excellent day, and a safe journey up north!" The police released a number of safety tips for motorists and motorbike riders too including ensuring motorcyclists are given plenty of space if overtaking them and checking mirrors regularly. For bikers they are urged to wear good quality, well-fitting helmets and protecting clothing, take a 'lifesaver' glance over the shoulder before carrying out any manoeuvres and installing a dashcam on their bikes if possible.
