Western Highway in Washington, Sunderland closed after crash

The Western Highway in Lambton, Washington, remains closed this afternoon (May 8) following a two-vehicle crash at around 2.30pm today. The stretch of road, that links to the A1(M), has led to tailbacks on the motorway as police urge motorists to find alternative routes. No further details about the crash, including any injuries, have been revealed.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 2.35pm today (Thursday), we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A195 in Washington. "Emergency services are in attendance. "A section of the road is closed from the roundabout connecting Emmerson Road and Birtley Road, to the roundabout connecting the A182.

The incident has also caused tailbacks on the nearby A1. Recommended:

"Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible."

A North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A195 in Washington, at 14.31 on Thursday, May 8.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one specialist paramedic, two hazardous area response team (HART) crews, and one clinical team leader to the incident."
