Magnum Logistics’ pledge to reduce carbon footprint by 40 per cent

Magnum Logistics, now established at its purpose-built home at DP World London Gateway in the South East, says it's been able to increase its sustainability efforts tenfold across its operations due to the focus the sites' owner places on minimising environmental impact. Magnum's ability to design a bespoke facility on the site has played a key role in its efforts to lower its carbon footprint as Eddie Ryan, commercial director, explains. He said: "Our new BREEAM and Planet Mark certified facility is a perfect combination of high-level racking, bulk storage space, fulfilment areas, dock-level and drive-through access, with facial-recognition access controls, all right next door to London Gateway docks.
Creating a purpose-built facility meant we could add in some important environmental features as part of our target to reduce our carbon footprint by 40 per cent by 2040. "Twenty-five per cent of the roof on our 100,000 square foot warehouse is covered by solar PV panels, which produces enough energy to power 184 terraced houses each year. We've also invested in rainwater harvesting to reduce the amount of water used from the mains supply.
In addition, our container shipments are moved from port to hub on electric tug vehicles "We've set ourselves some tough targets, including moving our fleet to all electric or low emission, diverting waste from landfill and using 100% energy from renewable sources. We're committed to greener logistics and environmental management for the benefit of our employees and our customers, because we all have a responsibility to protect the planet for future generations."
Magnum is a member of Palletways UK, Europe's largest express palletised freight network and its initiatives are applauded by Warwick Trimble, network director, who added: "We know the transport sector is generally a high contributor to the UK greenhouse gas emissions, which account for approx.
26 per cent on goods vehicles and approx.
10 per cent of the total. As a network we continuously seek ways to reduce our carbon footprint, optimise resource efficiency, and promote environmental stewardship throughout our supply chain, so it's great to see the strides being taken by Magnum." Magnum Logistics is one of over 120 independent transport providers that are part of the Palletways UK network.
They benefit from shared expertise and resources from within the group to deliver consignments of palletised freight to market faster and more cost-effectively than ever before.
The Palletways Group, renowned for its industry-leading IT developments and operational systems, comprises 450+ depots and 20 hub operations, through which it provides collection and distribution services across 24 European countries, including the UK.
