Motorists heading to the north of Preston are being warned of long delays as the M6 remains closed. Shortly after 12noon on Easter Sunday (20 April) the motorway was closed in both directions between Junction 33 (Garstang) and Junction 34 (Lancaster). As of 3pm the northbound carriageway has re-opened.

Police have confirmed a 14-year-old boy has died in the crash[8]. Emergency services have been scrambled to a serious crash which is understood to involve an overturned van. Lancashire Police say the motorway is 'likely to be closed for some time'.

Highways England North West said the North West Air Ambulance were called to the scene. Northbound traffic was being held to allow the air ambulance to land. The closure is in force for the southbound side where the crash took place.

Delays of up to an hour are reported on the M6 southbound from Junction 35 onwards. Traffic England was showing delays back to Forton Services on the northbound side but these are now cleared. The current reopening time for the southbound side is not expected to be until late evening on Sunday due to current estimates on Traffic England.

No official re-opening time has been given by National Highways North West as they say investigation work is continuing into the crash.
