Man killed in lorry crash tragedy is named officially for first time
An inquest has opened into the death of a pensioner who was killed after being struck by a lorry. Emergency services were called to Bolton Road in Darwen[1] on the morning of Monday December 9. A 70-year-old man had been hit while crossing the road close to the junction with Bridge Street and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed for several hours while collision investigators from Lancashire[2] Constabulary carried out tests at the scene. After the tragedy several floral tributes were left at the scene with the pensioner being named locally as Peter. One note described Peter as a "force of nature" while Peter's brothers and sisters wrote: "In remembrance of our Peter Pan!
The funniest, craziest boy that never grew up".

The pedestrian has been named formally as 70-year-old Peter David Giannasi from Darwen. A date for a final inquest will be scheduled once the police investigation has concluded.
Statements from eye-witnesses to the collision and Peter's family are expected to form part of the inquest evidence.
