M6 lorry crash: Lanes still shut 20 hours on from fatal motorway pile-up
Lanes on the M6 carriageways in both directions have remained closed overnight following a fatal horror crash involving two lorries and three cars. Yesterday (Wednesday, November 6), a horror smash involving two lorries and three cars happened at around 11.30am. Lancashire[1] Police said a lorry travelling northbound between Preston[2] and Lancaster[3] crossed onto the southbound carriageway of the M6[4] and collided with a number of other vehicles. The Southbound carriageway of the motorway is currently shut, as emergency repairs are undertaken between J33 A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South / Garstang) and J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange).
One lane is also closed on the Northbound carriageway. A police spokesman added: “Very sadly the collision has resulted in one fatality and a number of other serious injuries. Our thoughts are with all those affected at this time.
“Emergency services remain at the scene and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 while we continue to deal with the incident. The closure is likely to stay in place for some considerable time so please check before you travel as diversions are in place.” A fuel spillage also added to issues for workers as they cleared up the accident.
National Highways have stated that the road will remain closed southbound throughout the day today. This is to allow for emergency resurfacing works to take place following the serious collision. Drivers can take a diversion route by going along the A6 which runs parallel to the motorway.
Joining the M6 at J33, AA traffic news states there are severe delays of 30 minutes on the motorway, with drivers doing an average speed of five mph.
