Driver dies after lorry flips in field off the A1 in Cambs

The driver of a lorry that left the A1 in Cambridgeshire[1] yesterday and overturned in a field[2] has died. The one-vehicle crash took place at around 2.45 on Friday (November 1), and the driver died at the scene. A Cambridgeshire Police[3] spokesperson said the incident is believed to have been caused by a medical episode.

Nobody else is thought to have been injured. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue[4] joined the East of England Ambulance Service[5] and Cambridgeshire Police at the scene of the crash. Police first confirmed the A1 closure from the A47 at Wansford at around 3.10pm on Friday, and the road remained closed on Saturday (November 2).

National Highways also reported: “The incident has resulted in significant infrastructure damage and the vehicle has come to rest in a position and location which will make recovery very difficult.”

The following diversion route was in place on Saturday (November 2):

  • Exit the A1 southbound at the Wansford Interchange
  • At the roundabout at the end of the slip road, take the first exit on to the A47 eastbound towards Peterborough
  • Exit the A47 eastbound at J15 Thorpe Wood Interchange
  • At the J15 roundabout, take the third exit on to the A1260 Nene Parkway southbound
  • Continue to the Hampton Roundabout with the A1139 and take the third exit on to the Fletton Parkway
  • Remain on the A1139 Fletton Parkway westbound to J17 of the A1(M) Fletton Parkway Interchange
  • Bear left to follow the fast link road to re-join the A1(M) southbound.
