Drivers forced to swerve head-on crash as Citroën driver zooms wrong way on M55 motorway

Shocking footage captures a motorist career the wrong way down a motorway[1] – forcing other drivers to swerve to avoid a crash. The Citroen C1 was filmed via dashcam footage driving head-on towards oncoming traffic on the M55 towards Preston, Lancashire, on Thursday afternoon. Now police[2] say enquiries into the motorist’s “suitability to continue to drive” are ongoing after she was removed from the motorway at junction 3 for Kirkham, Lancashire.

The hair-raising clip captures the car zoom down the third lane of the motorway, which connects Blackpool with junction 32 of the M6, before the motorist filming quickly changes lane to avoid a serious smash.

But police intercepted the elderly motorist moments later, it is understood. When drivers turn 70, they must make a health declaration[3] in order to renew their licence and continue to drive. This issue came under debate in the summer, although it is unclear how old the motorist in Lancashire is.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary[4] said: “We were called at about 3.30pm on Thursday, September 26 to reports of a car driving the wrong way on the M55.

“Motorway patrols attended and located the driver, fortunately without further incident.

The driver, an elderly woman, was removed from the motorway and further enquiries are ongoing regarding her suitability to continue to drive.”
