Photos show work on 34 new ‘state-of-the-art’ electric vehicle space forecourt near Stevenage

The Electric Forecourt will provide 34 electric vehicles to be charged simultaneously with high power chargers that can deliver up to 360kW, which is capable of adding 100-miles of range in less than 10-minutes

Shovels have been planted into the ground as construction work has begun to install 34 “state-of-the-art” electric vehicle spaces near Stevenage. Work started on Thursday (November 2) on a new Electric Forecourt located on the Knebworth Estate, close to the Hertfordshire town.

The fourth Electric Forecourt from GRIDSERVE will provide visitors, staff and communities across the historic estate and in the wider area near Stevenage[1]. The ground-breaking work – located near Junction 7 off the A1(M) and suitably placed for passing motorway traffic – was attended by GRIDSERVE CEO Toddington Harper, and Knebworth House Estate’s Henry and Martha Lytton-Cobbold.

After it is completed, the Electric Forecourt will provide 34 electric vehicles to be charged simultaneously with high power chargers that can deliver up to 360kW, which is capable of adding 100-miles of range in less than 10-minutes. Several charging connectors will be on offer for all types of electric vehicles, with contactless payment accepted to help residents charge up efficiently.

The site will be powered by net zero carbon energy, as GRIDSERVE continue to make important changes to the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to support the decarbonisation of transport and shift the needle on climate change. Those using the new EV charging spaces can enjoy a hot drink, the relaxed waiting lounge, convenience retail store, children’s play area and a dedicated EV educational space to understand and be more aware of electric vehicles while their vehicles are charging.

The development will also include disabled parking, access ramps, usable washrooms and lifts to access all areas to make easy charging accessible to all. This comes after previous award-winning Electric Forecourts in Braintree and Norwich were very successful while also helping increase the number of EV registrations in the area.

GRIDSERVE’s third Electric Forecourt at London Gatwick Airport will open in December, and planning permission has already been confirmed for locations in Markham Vale, Uckfield, Gateshead and Plymouth – with more than 30 additional sites also under development. Toddington Harper, CEO of GRIDSERVE said: “As EV registrations continue to raise, it is crucial that all drivers are supported with reliable, convenient and fast public charging infrastructure.

“Our state-of-the-art Electric Forecourt in Knebworth will support Stevenage Borough Council and the Knebworth Estate to preserve biodiversity, tackle air pollution, reduce carbon emissions and make it easier for both residents and tourists to switch to low-carbon transport. We look forward to welcoming drivers to the newest Electric Forecourt in the latter part of 2024.”

GRIDSERVE Electric Highway has helped add to the UK’s motorway charging network with over 170 locations, over 680 charging units with more than 1,000 connectors. For more information, visit the GRIDSERVE website here[3].
