An aerial view of one of the bridges just north of Junction 32 on the M6 Pic: GoogleBridge repair and waterproofing works are to see lane closures on the M6 northbound between Preston and Lancaster for eight weeks.
A section of the M6 to the north of Junction 32[11] (Broughton) where the motorway passes over Stewart’s Wood bridge needs urgent works.
National Highways North West say this is so the motorway remains ‘safe and reliable’.
Works on the bridges had to be postponed last year after attempted closures caused gridlock in and around Preston[13].
Two lanes of the M6 northbound where Stewart’s Wood bridge is are to be closed during the day, with three lanes closed overnight between 8pm and 6am.
Work starts on Sunday (3 September) and will last until the end of October.
A spokesperson for National Highways North West said: “These measures will ensure the continued safety of road users and our staff during the work. The lanes that remain in use will be narrower than usual and subject to a 50mph speed limit which is reduced to 40mph whilst driving through the working area.
“We always aim to work to our schedule, but unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather conditions may mean slight changes occur at short notice.”
During the eight week period there will also be fix overnight closures of the M6 northbound between Junction 32 and Junction 33 with diversions via the A6. No dates have been given for these overnight closures at this moment in time.
