Long delays for drivers after ‘serious’ crash on M6 and two incidents in Wigan

The M6 was closed between junctions 24 (Ashton) and 23 (Haydock Island) during Monday’s rush hour after a “serious multi-vehicle collision”.

National Highways said all emergency services attended, including air ambulance, and traffic was stopped in both directions.

While the motorway was opened in both directions by 6.40pm, two of the three lanes heading southbound remained shut while recovery work was carried out.

Drivers[2] were warned of 60-minute delays and seven miles of congestion due to the crash.

Emergency services[3] rushed there at 3pm and while speculation is rife about what happened, little has officially been confirmed yet.

There were also reports of an incident on Shevington Lane, outside Shevington High School, which saw a car land on its roof at around 6.30pm.

The road was closed while emergency services attended.

Traffic[1] was stopped in both directions between junctions 24 (Ashton) and 23 (Haydock Island) at around 4.50pm on Monday (June 26).

All emergency services were called to the scene following the multi-vehicle collision, including an air ambulance.

Severe delays of up to 60 minutes were reported in the area, with motorists facing seven miles of congestion on approach to the scene.

At 6pm, National Highways confirmed the northbound carriageway had reopened, but the southbound side remained closed.

“Recovery is now ongoing at the scene,” a spokesman said.

“There are very long delays in both directions.”

One lane of the southbound carriageway reopened at approximately 6.40pm, with two remaining closed while the vehicles and scene were cleared.

At nearly 8pm, National Highways announced all lanes had reopened, but residual delays of 15 minutes remained.
