Transport Scotland initially said the road was restricted following the smash at junction 6A – 6 at Newhouse, North Lanarkshire[1].

The announcement was made on social networking site X at around 5.40pm.

It said: “The road is currently restricted eastbound due to a multi vehicle road traffic collision.

Traffic[2] is slow on the eastbound carriageway with currently a 15 minute delay.

Then 45 minutes later officials said the road was “closed” eastbound due to the ongoing incident.

Road users were then warned to use an alternative route and allow extra travel time.

Then just after 7pm the road was reopened again.

But restrictions were still in place.

They said the restrictions were causing a “34 minute delay” for drivers[3].

“Traffic is heavy in the area. Approximate 50-minute delay back from Junction 3.”

Police Scotland said earlier: “The M8 eastbound is currently closed at Junction 2 near Newbridge due to a lorry on fire.

“Emergency services are in attendance and motorists are asked to find an alternative route.”

It comes weeks after a lorry “exploded” and caught fire[4] on the A9 near Auchterarder.

Dramatic images taken after the blaze show the charred remains of the front of the vehicle.
