A man has been arrested after officers pulled over a car on the M6 motorway and discovered thousands of pounds in cash.

Officers stopped the white Volkswagen Golf on the motorway near Preston on Monday evening (April 13). The car was intercepted at Junction 31, where officers conducted a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

During the search, police found around ?7,000 in cash within the vehicle. The driver, a 39-year old-man from Birmingham, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

He has since been released under investigation.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday evening (April 14), a force spokesperson said: "Yesterday evening at around 8:30pm officers from our Roads Crime Team were on patrol on the M6 when they has reason to stop a white VW Golf that was travelling southbound.

"The car was stopped at Junction 31 of the M6 in Preston and the car and driver were searched under section 23 of the misuse of drugs act.

Officers found approximately ?7,000 cash in the car.

"The driver, a 39 year old man from Birmingham was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries."
