Journeys on the M25[1] could soon become quieter and smoother as National Highways is carrying out works in the Woking[2] area. The organisation has recently focused on reducing the noise coming from the motorway[3] carriageway between Junction 10 for Wisley and Junction 11 for Chertsey[4].

This stretch of carriageway has been identified as a "noise important area", meaning National Highways believes the road will benefit from resurfacing, noise barriers and insulation. Because of this designation, this part of the Surrey motorway will be treated in both directions by 2028.

Currently, this work has focused on the concrete slabs on the road, namely improving transverse joints between the slabs.

When this is finished, National Highways will treat the surface with a "next generation concrete surface" later in 2026.

This surface is meant to reduce the rumbling sound and improve the skidding resistance.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "We are committed to creating a more positive driving experience for road users and a better environment for local residents.

"We are aware of concerns over noise on this stretch of the M25[5] and have begun work to make the surface smoother and quieter."
