Manchester Evening News readers have shared their thoughts on the M60

Hate it or, for some reason, love it, everyone living in Greater Manchester has an opinion on the M60[1]. If you live here, it's pretty much unavoidable.

But even those who maintain a certain fondness for the motorway will admit sometimes it can be a bit of a nightmare.

Inspired by a recent return trip from Chadderton[2] to Eccles[3] which took 90 minutes, Manchester Evening News reporter Stephen Topping decided earlier this week to share his ranking of some of the worst sections of the dreaded M60 motorway[4]. While there was some close contenders for the top spot, it was Junction 25, at Bredbury, which he suggested was most atrocious section of the motorway.

As drivers visiting Junction 25 will find themselves immediately on the fast lane of the motorway, it a section of the M60 which many motorists will find particularly fearful.

Drivers on the the inside lane are also booted off the carriageway, only to re-join it later on, making it easy to see why some may consider it the worst part of the motorway.

It appears many Manchester Evening News readers also agree with this assessment, with a number sharing their thoughts of the hellish junction on our Facebook page.

One reader, Katherine Heard, with an apparent touch of sarcasm, commented: "I love joining on at Bredbury in the fast lane, mint idea."

Also sharing their thoughts on the fearful Junction 25, reader Diane Healey, quipped: "It's fab isn't it. I remember doing it with my daughter just after she'd passed her test.

Except I forgot to tell her until we got there." A third reader, Paula Trow, also commented: "Worst design of a junction ever!"

While another reader, Vincent Paul Jones, added: "There were plans, maybe ten years or more ago to correct this junction (joining at the third lane) ... which were obviously abandoned!"

Manchester Evening News reader Karen Duffy also wrote: "I work in Stockport and this used to terrify me at first. Who decided to make a junction where you join the motorway in the 3rd lane? However, soon got used to it and as someone else said, you need to join it at speed, not 40mph and also carry on in that lane till it's safe to cross into the 2nd lane."

But while it seems a number of people within Greater Manchester agree that Junction 25 could be the worst section of the M60, it appears another junction has also gained quite a reputation.

Since sharing our thoughts on the worst parts of the dreaded motorway, many readers have also taken to social media to complain about the chaos of Junction 24 at Denton[8].

In response to our ranking, shared on Facebook, one Manchester Evening News reader, Sue Nicholson, queried: "Junction 24 Denton?!"

Another reader, Anna Tennant, commented: "How is the junction for Denton not there.

I travel this at 9am everyday and get stuck with people coming on at Denton going to Stockport[9] direction far more than I have issues for Bredbury junction." Zoe Carter added: "You missed junction 24 at Denton and junction 1 at the pyramid."

So, with a number of readers complaining of Junction 24, it is possible this section may deserve the title of being the worst part of the M60.
