Update on M4 emergency incident in Wiltshire issued
Police and firefighters were called to a large lorry fire between Swindon and Chippenham on the M4 shortly after 6.30pm on Thursday, March 19. One lane of the motorway was shut while emergency services attempted to resolve the situation, causing slow traffic on the westbound carriageway near Chippenham. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service sent crews from Westlea and Swindon to the scene and four breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.
Dashcam images captured during the emergency response showed that an articulated lorry had suffered extensive damage following a fire.
It took around an hour to put out the fire and it is understood that the motorway fully reopened shortly after this. A spokesperson said: "We were called at 6:35pm yesterday, March 19, to a large vehicle fire on the M4 between junction 16 and junction 17. "Two appliances attended, from Westlea and Swindon, and on arrival found one articulated lorry involved in fire.
"Four breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire along with small hand tools.
Our stop was in at 7:26pm."
