UK Travellers Look for Cheaper Ways to Get Away this Easter
The rising cost of living and increasing fuel prices are threatening Brits' plans when it comes to their Easter getaways this year, with recent data revealing that many are reconsidering how - and whether - they travel. But as the Easter holiday period approaches and the cost of filling up continues to rise, National Express has reported a surge in bookings for Easter travel as households plan ahead for a cost-effective alternative to driving. Bookings for Easter half-term travel across the coach operator's extensive national network have increased by over 40% overall in the last two weeks*, with London to Stansted Airport, and London to Luton Airport bookings both up over 80%.
Bookings for travel between London and Liverpool, and London and Southampton are also up 42%. According to VisitBritain's latest Domestic Sentiment Tracker report, 64% of UK adults say that the cost of living crisis is affecting them. They say they're being careful with their finances or cutting back on spending, and it's one of their biggest barriers to taking an overnight UK trip (31%), while nearly a quarter of people (23%) say the cost of fuel is hindering their travel plans.
National Express says coach travel offers a practical, budget-friendly and comfortable alternative for those keen to get away in the UK or further afield, without the added expense or stress of driving. Helen Smyth, Director of Commercial at National Express, said: "People still want to get away this Easter and spend quality time with their family or simply switch off for a few days.
But with fuel prices continuing to rise, many are looking for more cost-effective ways to get around. "Coach travel allows people to enjoy a spring getaway without worrying about the cost of filling up the car, parking or other driving expenses - helping to keep UK breaks and airport travel for holidays abroad more affordable. "With hundreds of great value, reliable and frequent coaches serving destinations across the UK including all major airports, those seeking an Easter or spring break have one less thing to worry about and can make the most of their budget."
Despite financial pressures, the desire to take a holiday remains strong. VisitBritain data shows that the top reason UK adults want to take a domestic holiday is to spend time with their family or a partner (39%), followed closely by having a rest and getting away from it all (38%). As UK adults look for ways to manage rising costs, leaving the car at home and letting someone else take care of the driving could be one option to help make holidays more affordable this Easter. National Express' modern coach services link hundreds of destinations across the country, with leather reclining seats, free Wi-Fi on selected services, USB power sockets and a generous luggage allowance of up to 20kg.
