Speed limit slashed to 40mph on major motorway for THREE months

A 40mph speed limit will be in place for months on the M80[1] as major works bring lane closures and delays for drivers near Cumbernauld[2].

Transport Scotland[3]'s operating company, BEAR Scotland[4], is advising motorists to plan ahead and expect delays during a major programme of gantry replacement, bridge works, resurfacing and cyclic maintenance planned on the motorway from April through to July.

The extensive upgrades include overnight closures, weekend contraflows, and various other measures intended to keep traffic moving safely while work is underway.[5] Advertisement Advertisement

Planned works on the busy route include replacing ageing gantries, carrying out bridge repairs, resurfacing sections of the carriageway, and conducting routine maintenance tasks such as litter picking and grass cutting.

This coordinated programme of works is set to make the most of necessary carriageway closures, with a focus on ensuring that when the motorway is reopened, it can provide a "safe and reliable service".

The comprehensive improvement project kicks off in April and is scheduled to progress through to summer, with the first phase commencing on April 13.

This early stage features a series of overnight closures between 7.30pm and 6am on the M9 southbound and M80[6] northbound at various junctions for nearly two weeks. Advertisement

Junctions affected by these closures include J11, J9, and J6.

Beyond the overnight closures, weekend contraflows are set to take place in June and July, with traffic on the M80[7] between junctions 7 and 8 restricted to a single lane in each direction.

This lane reduction is expected to cause substantial delays, and drivers are advised to plan accordingly.

A 40mph speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day during much of this period, for the safety of road users, while temporary safety barriers are in place.

Additional work is planned north of M80 Junction 7, where a major project will take place to replace an overhead sign gantry that has reached the end of its service life.

This work will be carried out over April and May and will be followed in June and July by deck refurbishment works on Banknock Bridge[8], which carries the M80 over Station Road.

During this time, resurfacing of the carriageway on the M80 southbound at Junction 9 (Pirnhall) and on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway near Denny will be undertaken.

Resurfacing will share carriageway access with routine cyclic maintenance tasks which range from litter picking to pothole patching and structure inspections.

The timing of these activities aligns with the scheduled closures.

Further maintenance is planned on the M876[9] northbound and southbound, including successive overnight closures in line with the M80 schedule. Advertisement Advertisement

Not only will the closures be used for essential repair work, but these intervals also provide a window for inspections of the structures and the carriageway.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland's South East Network manager, offered a forward look at the substantial programme, stating: "We're co-ordinating a series of major improvement projects on the M80 to make the most of the carriageway closures that will be required and to ensure the motorway continues to provide safe and reliable service.

"This programme of works will see us replace and refurbish significant structures on the motorway, renew surfacing at two locations and complete a variety of routine maintenance tasks that require carriageway closures to be carried out safely.

"The works have been planned to minimise disruption to road users as far as possible, however certain tasks cannot be completed overnight so a series of weekend contraflows will be required. Advertisement

"Motorists should expect significant delays during these weekend contraflows, and longer journey times when following diversion routes.

"We thank road users in advance for their patience and ask them to comply with temporary speed limits for their own safety and to ensure our workers can go home safely to their families each day."

To mitigate the impact on drivers, signed diversion routes are set to be in place during overnight carriageway closures.

Consultation is being carried out with emergency services and other relevant stakeholders to share information about these projects in advance.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, with significant delays expected.
