Magor high street with deli delights and pooch pampering

This quaint little community boasts one of Monmouthshire's nicest high streets and attracts visitors from both Wales and the nearby English border. So, what makes this village special? Here's what locals had to say.

It's always been a gift and sweet shop. We rely a lot on the local people to come and support us. Village Treats an authentic village style sweet shop in Magor (Image: NQ)

"The area's growing massively with all the new builds and stuff like that, and it's such a beautiful area, but it is kind of like a hidden gem. It's tucked out of the way. People who do come and visit sometimes stop off as they come along the motorway, but when they do stop off, they are like, 'Oh my goodness, it's so lovely here,' and they didn't know it was here.

According to Leanne the village is definitely worth visiting in the summer. Village Treats an authentic village style sweet shop in Magor (Image: NQ) She said: ""In the summer, it's got a nice vibe.

The restaurants and the coffee shops have their tables and chairs outside, and it's nice to just sit outside." "Just come and visit us, really. You'd be surprised what's here.

We are just a small village -- come and shop local." Mia's Coffee and Co a welcoming cafe located in the quaint village of Magor (Image: NQ) Also dotted along the high street is Mia's Coffee Co a picturesque cafe located in the middle of The Square.

Staff at the cafe said the following about Magor and the cafe. "It's friendly and community-based, and I like the fact that the buildings around here have to stay looking quite old because they film series and stuff. It's usually period dramas -- they've had hay all down the streets before when they were filming. We've been here Since 2021, and we have lots of different treats and lunch options for people to enjoy. If food is something that you're looking for in the area, then you've got to check out The Village Gate.

We're familiar with most of our customers and I usually know what they want for lunch. We also get customers from over the bridge and even some who come off the motorway rather than stopping at the services." Suzie Willett in her shop The Village Gate. (Image: NQ)

After all those sweets and treats from the deli, it's only right that some visitors may want to wash them down with something stronger. We headed to The Golden Lion pub to see what was on tap. The pub has classics like Inch's cider, Aspall and Carling lager, and fans of Guinness won't be disappointed either. The pub also has a spacious beer garden area, hosts live music every Friday and is currently showing the Six Nations. As if all that doesn't appeal to visitors, those with four-legged friends can rest assured knowing there's also the option to have their pooches trimmed and pampered. The Dog Grooming Lounge is a wonderful local business, where even the scruffiest dogs come out looking spotless. The business has an impressive five-star rating online.

Owner Jodie Ransome, 34, told us more: "I've been here since I was 17. I worked in another salon as well, and then at 22 I decided it was the right time to open my own. So about twelve years ago--which is crazy--that's when it all started.

We're really close-knit, like a family, though there's a bit of sibling rivalry.

"All of our customers have been coming here a long time.

When the bridge dropped its toll fees, we saw a lot of new customers coming through too."
