M6 junction 42 to close overnight from March 13

The M6 northbound off-slip at junction 42 will be closed overnight from Friday, March 13, to Friday, March 20, for essential maintenance works and developments connected to the Carlisle[1] Southern Link Road. The southwest corner of the junction will also be closed overnight from Monday, March 16, to Friday, March 20. All closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am each night.

During the closure, northbound traffic will need to continue to junction 43, as there will be no overnight access from the A6 (Penrith[2]) or B6263 (Cumwhinton) to A6 London Road or the M6 northbound. However, access to both directions of the M6 from the A6 (Carlisle[3]) will remain available. A signed diversion route will direct drivers from junction 41 to junction 43, then via the A69, Eastern Way, and A6 London Road.

Cumberland Council[4] has advised that non-motorway users will be escorted through the area when it is safe to do so, or supported with alternative routes. Restrictions in Cumwhinton will remain in effect throughout the closure period. A spokesperson for Cumberland Council[5] said: "Cumberland Council thanks residents and road users for their cooperation during these important works and is committed to completing the project efficiently while minimising disruption."
