M4 was closed after crash near service station
Traffic was stopped on the M4 after a crash near a motorway service station this afternoon (March 9). The collision was initially reported at around 2.20pm, and traffic is queuing in the area. Vehicles were stopped between Chippenham and Bath.
Chippenham Police said: "We are responding to reports of a road traffic collision on the M4, near to J17 Leigh Delamere Services. "We would urge drivers to approach with caution, or seek alternative routes." Traffic monitor Inrix reported: "All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to accident on M4 Westbound from J17 A350 (Chippenham) to J18 A46 (Bath / Tormarton).Traffic was held around 14:15.
Previously reported as an obstruction." National Highways said: "Traffic is being held on the #M4[1] westbound between J17 (#Chippenham[2]) and J18 (#A46[3]) following a collision involving at least 2 vehicles. All emergency services are attending.
Please expect delays, we'll keep you updated." By around 3pm, National Highways said the motorway had reopened: "All lanes are now open on the #M4 westbound between J17 (#Chippenham) and J18 (#A46). The earlier collision involving at least 2 vehicles has now been cleared.
