M1 in Leicester shut in both directions with long delays LIVE amid incident

A major motorway has been brought to a standstill due to a police-led incident. The M1 is closed in both directions between Junction 21 (Leicester) and Junction 22 (Markfield), near Leicester Forest East services. Leicestershire Police[1] and other emergency services are at the scene, with National Highways[2] assisting in traffic management. The nature of the incident is not yet known.

Traffic maps show long delays in the area, with slow-moving vehicles at the junction with the M69 and Braunstone Way. Congestion has also built up on the Leicester Western Bypass approaching the M1, as well as on the M1 itself, both north and south of the closure, Leicestershire Live[3] reports. Diversion routes are in place.

M1 has been reopened

Leicestershire Police has confirmed that the M1 has reopened in both directions.

In an update on X, the force said: "The M1 both North and Southbound at LFE Services between J21 and 21a The road is now fully open. Expect delays due to build up of traffic. Thank you for your patience."

Incident is led by Leicestershire Police

National Highways says the M1 in Leicestershire is closed in both directions between Junction 22 (Markfield) and Junction 21 (Leicester) due to an incident led by Leicestershire Police.

Emergency services, including officers from the force, are at the scene. National Highways is also assisting with traffic management and implementing strategic road closures.

Northbound diversion route

Motorists travelling on the M1 northbound are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs:

• Exit the M1 northbound at Junction 21 and take the third exit from the junction onto the A5460 eastbound.
• Continue east along the A5630 for approximately 0.5 km and take the first exit north onto the A563 slip road to the A563 Lubbesthorpe Way/Meridian Roundabout.
• Then take the third exit from the roundabout northbound onto A563 Lubbesthorpe Way.
• Continue north on the A563 passing through the A563/A47 Hinckley Road, A563 Scudamore Road Roundabouts, Park View junction, Glenfield Roundabout, Aikman Road and Dillon Way junctions to the A563/A59 Groby Road Roundabout.
• At the roundabout take the first exit (left) onto the A50 westbound.
• Continue westbound on the A50 passing through the A50 Station Road Roundabout to the A50/A46 Interchange.
• At the interchange take the second exit and continue along the A50 passing through the Lena Drive junction, Bradgate Hill and Fieldhead Roundabouts to A50/M1 Junction 22 Interchange.
• At the interchange take the fourth exit and rejoin the M1 northbound.

Southbound diversion routes

Motorists travelling on the M1 southbound are advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol on road signs. Southbound Traffic from M1 Junction 22:

• Exit the M1 southbound at Junction 22 and take the firstexit(left) onto the A50.
• Continue along the A50 eastbound passing through the Field Head and Bradgate Hill Roundabouts and Lena Drive junction to the A50/A46 Interchange.
• At the interchange take the second exit and continue along the A50 eastbound passing through the A50 Station Road Roundabout to the A50/A563 Groby Roundabout.
• At the roundabout take the third exit onto the A563 Nene Parks Way southbound.
• Continue southbound along the A563 passing through Dillon Way and Aikman Road junctions, Glenfield Road Roundabout, Park View junction, A563 Scudamore Road and A563/A47 Hinckley Road Roundabouts to the A563 Lubbesthorpe Way/Meridian Roundabout.
• Then take the second exit from the roundabout andcontinue southbound along to the A56/A5460 signals, then turn right and merge onto the A5640 slip road.
• Continue along the slip road and through the traffic signals and join the A5460 westbound to M1 Junction 21.
• Take the first exit and rejoin the M1 southbound.

Southbound Traffic from M1 Junction 21a and A46:

• Exit the A46 southbound at the B5380 Kirby
• Muxloe Interchange and continue around the interchange and take the third exit north back onto the A46.
• Continue northbound along the A46 to the A46/A50 Interchange.
• Exit the Interchange and take the third exit onto the A50 westbound.
• Then continue along the Diversion Route as above.
