M1 crash LIVE: Motorway shuts lanes near East Midlands Airport causing travel chaos

Motorists face travel chaos this morning on a busy motorway after a crash near to an airport leading to lane closures. The M1 northbound[1] currently has two lanes closed between J23 and J24 close to East Midlands Airport[2] due to a road traffic collision, said Leicestershire Police. Traffic has been brought to a slow crawl and drivers are urged to allow extra time on their journeys.

National Highways stated: "#M1 northbound between J23A and J24 near @EMA_Airport 2 lanes (of 4) are closed due to a collision/broken down vehicle and fuel spill. Vehicle recovery is at scene. Delays of 30 minutes, just under 2 miles of congestion on the approach."

Leicestershire Police urge motorists to avoid the area

Leicestershire Police said in a statement: "The M1 Northbound between J23 & J24 currently has 2 lanes closed.

"Please continue to try and avoid the area and find an alternate route. Thank you for your patience."
