Drivers are being urged not to panic despite oil prices[2] jumping to over £100 a barrel.
Brent crude soared to nearly £120 dollars at one point on Monday, in levels not seen since the summer of 2022.
Oil is the main component used to make petrol[3] and diesel, so when oil prices rise, this can have a direct impact on what you pay at the pumps.
The nationwide average for diesel broke through the 150p a litre barrier over the weekend, to reach 150.97p on Sunday, according to the RAC. The average for petrol for unleaded hit 137.51p a litre on Sunday.
Edmund King, AA president, has explained that any big jumps in fuel prices won't happen overnight.

This is because fuel has been purchased at previous prices, so any impact from rising oil costs can take time to filter down to what you pay at the pump.
In the meantime, drivers are being urged to compare fuel prices where they live so they can find the best prices today.
Mr King said: "Drivers should not change their refuelling habits but can consider cutting out some non-essential journeys and changing their driving style to conserve fuel.
"These measures linked to warmer weather means drivers can ensure their fuel stretches further."

The data is open-source, allowing third-party apps[11] and websites and car satellite navigation systems to display live, up-to-date, and comparable prices.
The Competition and Markets Authority said it would take action against retailers that fail to provide data for the scheme.
You can save money[12] on fuel by avoiding expensive motorway service stations and planning your journey around cheaper refuel stops.
