A car went up in flames on the M62 motorway on Monday evening. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) were called to the westbound carriageway near junction 7 of the M62 at around 7.52pm on March 9 following reports of a vehicle fire.
According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, the westbound entry slip road was blocked due to the incident at the A57 Warrington Road junction. Images from the scene show a vehicle engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the air.[1][2]
Fire crews arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted, with two fire engines reaching the motorway at around 8pm.
Firefighters found a car fully engulfed in fire[3], but confirmed the driver had managed to leave the vehicle before crews arrived and was not injured.
One firefighter wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using a hose reel jet under general observation.
After the fire was brought under control, crews remained at the scene to dampen down the area before handing the incident over to National Highways. Firefighters[4] then began preparing to leave the scene.
A spokesperson for MFRS said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service is currently in attendance at an incident on the M62 Westbound, Rainhill.
"Crews were alerted at 7.52pm and two fire engines arrived on scene at 8.00pm.
Crews arrived to find a car fully involved in fire.
The driver was out prior to crews' arrival and was uninjured.
"One firefighter wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire under general observation using a hose reel jet.
"Once extinguished, firefighters continued to dampen down the area.
"Crews are now handing the scene over to the Highways Agency and preparing to leave the scene."
