M62 traffic LIVE: police incident sees air ambulance deployed and motorway closed in both directions

A police incident on the M62 near Liverpool has seen tailbacks and the air ambulance called as traffic was halted in both directions. The incident near Huyton saw the motorway closed between J5 and J6 in both directions, with traffic facing serious disruption. The event was described as a 'police incident' and was rated 'severe' on the National Highways traffic alerts system.

Woman fell from motorway bridge, police confirm

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm we received a report that a woman had fallen from a bridge on Junction 5 of the M62 in Roby.

"The incident was reported at around 3.30pm today (Sunday 22 February) and emergency services, Merseyside Police, and North West Ambulance Service, attended the scene. "A woman in her 50s has been taken to hospital via air ambulance in a serious condition. Junctions five to seven of the M62 was closed during the incident and has since been reponed."

Closure remains in place near roundabout

The closure on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 has been partially removed and now remains in place around junction 5, Bowrign Park Interchange. Traffic on the re-opened westbound carriageway is reportedly flowing well.

The westbound carriageway has reportedly reopened on the M62 around Bowring Park Interchange. The eastbound carriageway remains closed between junctions 5 and 6, according to the AA.

Police responded to 'concern for safety'

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "I can confirm were are in attendance at an incident at junction 5 of the M62. We were called at 3.29pm today to a concern for safety, so we have not long been at scene. "Ambulance including Helimed are landing just now (3.50pm) in relation to a female that was injured at that location."

Traffic map shows long delays

Traffic maps show both east and westbound carriageways closed, with traffic already tailing back.

A much longer closure appears to be in effect on the westbound carriageway, stretching for 4 miles between 6 nad junction 5.
