M4 road closure: When will pylon works be completed?
It comes after homes were evacuated in Winnersh, including several houses in Eden Way as well as Russells Way and Hatch Farm Way after a tree struck the pylon, resulting in 'significant' structural damage. The M4 is closed in both directions between the A329M junction 10 and junction 11 at Shinfield due to risks to the power line pylon in high winds. In an update from Wokingham Borough Council, it has been confirmed that the electrical work is expected to be completed by tomorrow (Thursday, February 19), however this is weather dependant due to the height at which engineers will be working.
A council spokesman said: "As a precaution, the electricity line was safely switched off and power supplies were successfully rerouted, meaning there have been no power outages for customers."Due to strong winds, there remains a risk of further instability. "For safety reasons, National Highways took the decision to fully close the M4 overnight while engineers worked to make the site safe. "This is a complex operation which includes installing a large crane, securing the damaged tower, carefully removing the overhead cables in stages, and dismantling the structure if required.
"The appropriate equipment is expected to arrive on site tonight so that work can commence. " They added: "There are notable local impacts. The M4 between Junctions 10 and 11, as well as Hatch Farm Way, remain closed, and pedestrian access restrictions have been implemented. "Local roads are experiencing heavy congestion, although this has been slightly reduced due to the school half-term. "
Diversion routes are particularly affecting Wokingham town centre, Lower Earley, and the approaches to the A329(M).
These closures will remain in place until the works are completed.
The Streetworks Team is proactively reviewing the road network to ease congestion in the local area wherever possible.National Highways will be using the current closure of the M4 to carry out essential resurfacing works.
