Man, 18, charged after being caught ‘travelling at 148mph’ on M8 in Lanarkshire

An 18-year-old man has been charged[1] after he was allegedly caught driving at 148mph on the M8 in Lanarkshire[2]. Officers from the Lanarkshire Road Policing department stopped the driver near Eurocentral on Saturday (January 17) around 9.35pm.

According to the force, officers followed the driver over a set distance after the car went by them on the busy motorway. Police say he was monitored driving at a "sustained high speed" during the incident.

In a picture shared by Police Scotland[3], the speed tracker can be seen showing 148mph, in an area where the limit is 70mph.

The teenager is due in court in connection with the incident.

Road Policing Scotland posted to X: "LanarkshireRP were joining the M8 last night when this car went by them.

It was followed over a set distance driving at a sustained high speed before being stopped.

"The 18-year-old male driver will now be appearing at court to explain himself.

Our advice - DontRiskIt."

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "A man has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence, which happened around 9.35pm on Saturday, 17 January, 2026 on the M8 near junction 6.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

The post was shared as part of Police Scotland's 'Fatal 5' campaign which urges drivers against dangerous driving, drink/drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, being distracted at the wheel, and speeding.
