Motorists are facing travel chaos with carriageways on two major motorways[1] closed this morning amid freezing conditions with weather warnings[2] in place. The M60 anti-clockwise at Stockport is closed due to snow overnight and southbound traffic on the M42 is stopped following an incident this morning. The M42 in Warwickshire closed northbound between junction nine for the M6 toll and junction 10 for Tamworth after a "police-led incident".

Motorists warned of 'hazardous' travel amid wintry conditions

Amber and yellow National Severe weather warnings have been issued for snow and ice over the coming days making travel "hazardous" in parts of the country.

The Met Office states: "Cold Arctic air now covers most of the UK, with temperatures well below average, widespread frost and ice and an increasing risk of snow showers. "Snow is expected to settle on the ground in some areas particularly in northern and some central areas. There is also a risk of widespread ice, making travel hazardous."

Drivers faced delays following a crash on the M56 eastbound this morning

Two lanes were closed near Princess Parkway at junction three and at one point around 8am queues tailed back to Manchester Airport at junction five.

M60 closed following heavy snow overnight

Motorists have been warned of travel disruption with the M60 closed this morning due to snow. A message from National Highways read: "Traffic is currently stopped on the #M60 both ways between J1 and J27 #Stockport due to adverse driving conditions brought on by snowfall overnight. Travel disruption is likely today as much of the country is subject to a @MetOffice weather warning."

National Highways said in a statement: "The M42 in Warwickshire is closed northbound between J9 M6 Toll and J10 Tamworth due to a Police led incident.

"Traffic is also stopped on the M42 southbound between J10 and J9.
