M3 Junction 9 Scheme: Motorway to close for development work

The road will be closed from 9pm on Friday, January 30, until 6am on Monday, February 2, between Junction 8 and Junction 9, to allow for the installation of steel beams for new roundabout bridge decks. This work is part of the M3 junction 9 improvement project and will also impact the A34 and A33. Another closure will take place from 9pm on Friday, February 13, until 6am on Monday, February 16.

As previously reported, a diversion route map is available and can be accessed on Google Maps[1]. The council has reminded drivers operating large vehicles, lorries, or freight travelling to and from the coast to use the strategic diversion via the A3 during the closures.

Roadworks on the M3, are being carried out by National Highways as part of the new junction nine scheme, which has seen millions of pounds injected into the improvement of the junction, and is forecasted to be complete by 2030. The works includes changing and widening the junction, to have free-flowing links, as well as building two new bridges on the gyratory, with the aim to reduce congestion, improve safety and air pollution. In addition to the M3 closures, there will be a separate 24-hour southbound closure on the A34 (from Three Maids Hill) and A33 (from the Cart and Horses junction).

The closure will be in place from 9pm on Saturday, February 7 2026, until 9pm on Sunday, February 8.

This is to enable the installation of a new beam on the Kings Worthy[2] Bridge following the successful removal of the northern beam in November.

The improvement works are being delivered by the Volker Fitzpatrick Balfour Beatty joint venture in partnership with National Highways: South-East.
