M1 traffic RECAP: Flipped lorry and crash close motorway lanes in both directions

Motorists faced long delays on a busy stretch of motorway after two separate incidents led to lane closures on both carriageways. Dramatic images show an HGV on its side in a field next to the M1 southbound between junctions 14 and 13 near Milton Keynes, causing tailbacks of up to 3.5 miles. A serious crash on the northbound carriageway between junctions 12 and 13, which required an air ambulance, also resulted in congestion of up to five miles.

Stretch of M1 still congested

A stretch of the M1 southbound between junctions 14 and 13 near Milton Keynes remains congested, according to Google Traffic.

The delays come after a lorry overturned on the southbound carriageway just before 11.30am on Monday, with two of the four lanes still closed into the evening. A serious crash on the M1 northbound between junctions 12 (Toddington) and 13 (Brogborough) also led to the closure of three lanes, which have since re-opened.

Clear up operation pictured on M1 after crash where air ambulance called

An air ambulance was called to a crash northbound on the M1 today which led to three lanes being closed. A message from National Highways East said an air ambulance had left the scene around two hours ago.

Tailbacks of five miles have now eased to three, it added in an update.

A long queue of traffic was pictured on the M1 northbound this morning following a serious crash which led to three of four lanes closing. The incident happened between junctions 12 and 13 and while the carriageway has now reopened, there are still long delays. National Highways says: "All lanes are now open on the #M1 northbound between J12 #Toddington and J13 near #MiltonKeynes.

The earlier collision has now been cleared. Delays of just over 30 minutes, 3 miles of congestion remain on the approach."

Second crash on M1 after three lanes closed causing major congestion

National Highways earlier told of a crash northbound on the M1 which led to three carriageways being closed and an air ambulance was called to the scene. The agency stated: "#M1 northbound between J12 #Toddington and J13 near #MiltonKeynes 3 lanes (of 4) are closed due to a collision. @roadpoliceBCH are at scene.
