Everything we know as crash involving four vehicles closes M6 motorway

  • Emergency services were called to the M6 motorway at lunchtime on Saturday after reports of a collision and a vehicle that had caught fire. All traffic was stopped on a northbound stretch of the motorway near Knutsford, Cheshire.
  • Queues began to build up to the closure at junction 19, with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service issuing a warning over delays. Motorists were told to avoid the area.

    Motorway cameras showed long queues.

  • Pictures from the scene went on to show the vehicle on fire, with smoke billowing up into the air from the motorway. There were reported delays of at least 30 minutes on approach to the incident.
  • It was later confirmed that lanes 1, 2 and 3 - of 4 - were closed northbound between junction 18 for Middlewich and junction 19 at Tabley Interchange due to what was described as 'a collision and vehicle fire'.
  • In a statement Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed emergency services were dealing with a four-vehicle collision. "One vehicle was on fire but has now been extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using a hose reel jet," said the statement.
  • The fire service went on to confirm there were no serious injuries. The statement said: "One person is believed to have sustained injuries, and all other occupants are accounted for and safe.

Delays are expected while the motorway is cleared, and everyone is checked over."

  • At around 1.40pm, highways bosses said traffic had eased and the M6 was back to normal. "Delays are expected while the motorway is cleared, and everyone is checked over," added the fire service.
