Avon and Somerset Police confirmed he died at the scene of a collision on the M5[2] at around 11.10pm on Sunday, November 30. Sharing tributes to Facebook, one person said: "Such a tragic accident and a loss of an amazing young lad."
"Thank you for being there for me throughout the years," a second person wrote. "You will be remembered"
"He was a really good chap. Going to leave a massive hole in a lot of people's lives," another added.
"Heartbreaking, that poor boy, thoughts with everyone involved," a fourth person commented.
One person said: "You're gonna be missed.
Thoughts are with your family." They added that they last spoke to the young man the day before the collision.
"I'll miss you forever mate. I love you so much," another said.
The ambulance service informed police that a patient had left an ambulance on the northbound carriageway of the motorway shortly after 11pm on Sunday, November 30. The young man was being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, which stopped on the M5 between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon to provide treatment.
An off-duty police officer tried to bring the young man to safety, but shortly after this, he was involved in a collision with a car on the southbound carriageway.
Despite the efforts of emergency service workers, he died at the scene.
In a statement given on Monday, Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family at such a devastating time. We will support them in any way we can.
"This incident has had a significant effect on our officers and ambulance crews who are understandably incredibly upset by what happened. As well as providing support to the man's family, we are also making sure that the appropriate welfare arrangements are in place for our staff and also for those members of the public who were either directly involved or who witnessed the incident.
"A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by our Professional Standards Department.
It's already begun an independent investigation into the circumstances, which we will fully cooperate with."
