The M27 will be shut down between junctions nine and 11 from 8pm on December 24 until 4am on January 4. There will be a signed diversion route along the A27, which is mostly two lanes in each direction, during the closure.[2]
Road users should plan their journey in advance and consider alternatives including public transport, travelling during less busy times, using different routes, or considering if their journey is really necessary, the local council said.
Lulu Bowerman, Hampshire County Council's cabinet member for highways, told Sky News: "After months of meticulous planning, we are putting the final preparations in place for what will be a major and complex engineering operation.
"Once the M27 closes from 8pm on Christmas[4] Eve, work will continue around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to complete the job safely and as quickly as possible."
Ms Bowerman added: "The work has been planned at a time when traffic levels are lower, but we appreciate it will cause inconvenience, and we thank everyone for their understanding in advance as we deliver these vital improvements."
The junctions accessible during the closure are Westbound exit remains open at Junction 11 (Fareham/Gosport), Eastbound exit remains open at Junction 9 (Whiteley/Park Gate).
No westbound entry at Junction 11 (towards Southampton/A32)
No eastbound entry at Junction 9 (towards Portsmouth).
Once the new underpass is in position, the embankments will be backfilled and reinstated using approximately 6,000 tonnes of material.
Specialist teams will be working around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week including Christmas Day and Boxing Day, the council has added in a message for motorists.
