Footballer killed in crash as he returned from game
A footballer died when his car crashed on the M1 while driving home from a National League North game.
Macclesfield forward Ethan McLeod[1], who was returning from his team's match at Bedford, died in the collision at 22:40 GMT on Tuesday, near junction 15 for Northampton.
The 21-year-old former Wolves player's white Mercedes hit the nearside metal barrier, Northamptonshire Police said.
The northbound carriageway was shut for more than eight hours after the crash.
Police said members of the public and officers tried to help but the player died at the scene.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them.
Traffic was held on the motorway between junction 14 for Milton Keynes and junction 15 for two hours during the initial emergency response before being turned around and redirected.
The road was later reopened at about 07:30 GMT.
