Bolton drivers to face festive drink and drug driving checks
The enforcement campaign, which began on December 1, forms part of the national Operation Limit initiative and will run into the New Year. All UK police forces are taking part in reducing deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired driving. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers across Bolton will be carrying out roadside checks throughout December, targeting not only drink and drug driving but also the Fatal Four offences: speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving under the influence.
Neighbourhood police officer James Asbury said road safety is a clear priority for communities in Bolton. He said: "Driving offences are a priority for the local neighbourhood policing team in Bolton, and in the lead up to Christmas, there will be an added focus on this area of work. "From recent PACT meetings with our communities, we recognise that policing our roads robustly is what residents want, and we are here to act on behalf of them."
Local neighbourhood teams will be supporting several operations, working alongside roads policing officers and partners, including the Motor Insurers' Bureau, to make Bolton's roads safer for everyone. Operation Limit is also urging anyone planning to drink to organise safe transport in advance. Mr Asbury added: "I urge anyone who wants a drink over the Christmas period to ensure that they plan transport arrangements in advance.
"Over the winter period, conditions will no doubt worsen on our roads, and therefore I urge everyone to take extra care when travelling to see their family and friends." Bolton driver in court after going off motorway carriageway[1] Jaguar driver admits to killing man in Chew Moor Lane crash[2]

Last year's campaign saw 570 people arrested across Greater Manchester for drink or drug driving, highlighting both the scale of the problem and the force's commitment to taking action.
The operation also supports the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers via 101, or 999 in an emergency. Information can also be shared anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police are appealing to everyone to make responsible choices this Christmas and help keep Bolton's roads safe for all.
