UK snow LIVE: Greater Manchester road shuts for hours due to snow as Met Office warnings in place
A major Greater Manchester road was shut off for hours due to snowfall as Met Office weather warnings[1] remain in place today. The A628 Woodhead Pass was closed in both directions throughout the morning due to snow, travel services have said this morning. The major road was closed off between A57 Mottram Moor, at the Gun Inn traffic lights in Hollingworth, and the A616 at the Flouch Roundabout.
The Snake Pass has also seen snowfall overnight, but is 'just passable' between the A6013 (Ladybower Reservoir) and Hurst Road (Royal Oak Inn), travel services have said. Woodhead Pass re-opened at 10am. Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, the A555 Manchester Airport Relief Road remains shut due to flooding.[2]
It comes after the Met Office issued a number of severe weather warnings[3] for snow and ice earlier this week, with snow falling across parts of the UK. The warnings, which are in place all throughout Wednesday, cover Northern Ireland, parts of Wales, northern and southwest parts of England, the Midlands and much of Scotland. And on Wednesday, photos from across the UK showed snowfall in parts of the North East.
An amber snow warning is also in place for parts of North Yorkshire and Humber from the early hours of Thursday morning.
A UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) amber cold health alert[4] is in place for parts of England, including Yorkshire & Humber, the North West and the North East, while all other regions in England will be under a yellow alert.[5] This will remain in place until 8am on Saturday (November 22).
